The MFAHL Story
The MFAHL story started in 1987 when by accident we left a portion of our land fallow for two years. We realized that Ober tree (Albizia coriaria) and other species of trees which had almost gone extinct in our area started growing in the fallow land.
Ober tree was commonly used for boat building and being that Homabay County where we are located is next to Lake Victoria, this tree was highly sought after and with time it started disappearing due to over-harvesting. Seeing these trees growing on their own in the land that had been left fallow was a motivation for us and so we started looking for more trees and deliberately planting them while conserving the ones that were there already.
Much later, in the same effort of afforestation, reforestation and conservation, we decided to start growing bamboo. At this moment, we have four acres of four types of bamboo in MFAHL Farm.
The Transformation
In the past ten years, we have discovered that we rarely go without rainfall for more than three weeks even during the dry season in our area. Most of the time, even when the surrounding region does not experience rain, we get light showers and we attribute this to the 8 acre forest cover that we have in place. This is not only a benefit to MFAHL Farm but also the community around us.
